Sodwana Bay Lodge

When Divers, Fishermen and eco-adventurers can resist the call of the great African outdoors no more, they return to one place – Sodwana Bay Lodge. In the heart of Maputaland, close to the pristine Lake Shazibe nestling behind the world’s highest natural dunes, a short distance from the sea, Sodwana Bay Lodge has been carefully designed to match the rustic eco-orientated nature of the region. The warm Indian Ocean currents of the Mosambique Channel wash onto the shores of Maputaland. Here, on the relatively untouched eastern seaboard of southern Africa, wide lakes and extensive river estuaries shimmer with life, fertile swamp and sand forest abound with rare and protected animal and plant species, while towering dunes shelter golden beaches from the lush interior. Venturing oceanwards, the seabed is bejewelled with coral reefs and formations of dramatic splendour, staging an unceasing pageant of every imaginable kind of marine life. Africa’s renowned “Big-5” – elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard – are complimented by a rich array of antelope and bird species. Here the “Big-5” can become the prized “Big-6” as humpback whales spout and gambol close to shore.

Sodwana Bay

“We stayed 2 nights on the resort. The room was fairly small, and there was only a wall between the bedroom and the bathroom/toilet (ie no ceiling). However the room was clean and comfortable and as a gated reserve it is very safe. We had a great morning at the pool area. It was a shame that due to weather conditions we couldn't snorkel and as we aren't divers we were limited to what we could do. The only beach is the KZN reserve which charges for entry, However it is a beautiful beach and with the right weather it would be amazing. The restaurant on site was good. There was a good choice for dinner, although the best part of breakfast was the pancakes.”

Guesthouse and Diving

“We stayed in House 59, most comfortable with a charming communal entertainment area. The Bedrooms all had working air absolute must! The open plan kitchen and chill/tv room is wonderful, except an aircon in there would have been ideal. The restaurant has an adequate menu and the service was prompt and pleasant. The diving was exceptional, the staff are friendly and efficient, the skipper accurate, the boats are well maintained, and run on unnecessary breakdowns. The dive masters are exceptional! Congratulations on a very well run establishment. We had the most wonderful diving holiday and we will be back!”

Great units

“Our unit was fantastic and we had everything we needed for a really good price. Very clean and well serviced every dayThe restaurant is pretty ordinary and the pub and pool not much to write home about. A few cushions on the handful of pool loungers would have been nice. The dive school was fantastic and very professional. My 16 year old did her dive licence and loved it. We felt comfortable with the level of instruction and organisation for dives was excellent.”
